Title
Postcard from Ehrich Weiss to his mother
Subject
Houdini, Harry, 1874-1926--Childhood & youth.
Description
At the age of twelve, Ehrich Weiss ran away from home in an effort to earn money and to alleviate his family's grinding poverty. This is the earliest sample of Houdini's handwriting in the collections of the Library of Congress and it is supplemented by a later typed commentary made by the magician.
This postcard, written three years before Hull House opened, implies that children in poverty may often feel that they must leave their family to provide for them. This still occurs today, as can be seen in the documentary "Which Way Home." Hull house would have removed the need for children to leave home to support their families, giving the children an opportunity to go to school.
