Description

Print showing a young cavalier on horseback and a poor boy riding a mule, each accompanied by a dog. Includes a remarque in lower right corner showing a dog's head looking at a falcon resting on an arm.

The above political cartoon was drawn three years after Hull House founded. The image shows the story of two men, one wealthy, the other poor, effectively showing each how the other half lives. The poor man is also paying deference to the wealthy man by bowing his head as he passes. The concept of deference may have also led to a stigma around poverty as it involves paying respect to your betters, essentially those more wealthy than you.
